The Falkland Islands”

About 500 kilometres from Argentina and about 13,000 kilometres from Great Britain is a small group of islands. The British call them  “The Falkland Islands” and the Argentinians call them “Las Malvinas”. These islands have a total area of about 12,000 square kilometres- approximately half the size of Wales. They were first discovered, uninhabited, in 1592 by British explorers. During the 18th and 19thcenturies Argentina, France, Britain and Spain all occupied them for brief periods. But life wasn’t easy on these remote windswept islands, and it wasn’t until 1833, when they had been deserted for some years, that the British returned and established a permanent community with an economy based on sheep farming. In April 1982, to Britain’s great surprise, Argentina invaded, declaring the islands Argentinian territory and Spanish the official language. The war which followed lasted only 10 weeks but 746 Argentinian and 265 British soldiers died before Britain recaptured the islands. In Britain, victory made Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime Minister, very popular. In Argentina defeat contributed to the collapse of the repressive military regime and the restoration of democracy. The people of the Falklands have returned to their sheep but the islands are still heavily guarded by British troops.
